Pregnancy can be divided in to three trimesters and an expecting mother can feel heartburn during all or any of the trimesters.

Heartburn during Pregnancy, What Are It’s Causes

Pregnancy is a time of a lot of hormonal changes in the body and besides this many physical changes also take place inside the body. Levels of progesterone hormones rise during pregnancy and it mainly relaxes the muscles of uterus and makes them smooth so that they can expend accordingly to fetus growth. This progesterone hormone also relaxes the valve that lies between esophagus and stomach. This valve mainly inhibit the reflexes of acid towards the throat and due to progesterone effect, activity of this valve decreases and the acid can pass through it towards sternum and throat which cause frequent nausea and heartburn during pregnancy.
As pregnancy enters in to 2nd and 3rd trimester, growth of baby can also cause heartburn during pregnancy. As the baby grows, the abdominal cavity gets more and more congested and all the organs feel pressure. In this condition the acid inside stomach is also pushed towards esophagus causing it to pass through the valve and its movement towards throat makes burning sensation throughout whole food pipe.
The problem of heart burning sensation hits almost 90% of pregnant women and it usually stops after the birth of baby. The sleeping time at night is the most common time for heartburn as while sleeping the food pipe remains in transverse position and in this position the acid do not need extra pressure to pass through the esophagus. It can keep on flowing towards esophagus and gets pass through it very easily. But this condition becomes very worse for anyone as due to sudden heartburn the pregnant lady gets awake and it irritates a lot. If continue for long time it affects the activeness during day hours. Chances of heartburn during night raise when one sleep lying straight or on right side.

Heartburn at Morning and Day Time During Pregnancy :

The sleeping time is the duration in which we do not do anything for many hours. Acid production in stomach continues throughout 24 hours a day. In day times this digestive acids keep on neutralizing by the eatables we consume and while sleeping it is neutralized by the saliva which we swallow during sleep. But when the saliva production becomes low or the pregnant lady is not swallowing this saliva during sleep, the deposition of digestive acids raise too much in the stomach to give heartburn in the morning. Consuming such foods in the night which are known to cause hyper acidity also give episodes of heartburn in the morning during pregnancy. So always avoid consuming hyper acidic foods in the night.

Heartburn during Pregnancy After Eating Foods:

Though the acids in the stomach get neutralized after eating some foods and one gets relief from heartburn during pregnancy. But sometimes it happens that after consuming food the problem of heartburn raises too much. What may be the reason? Well it is simple, sometimes the previous episode of severe acid reflux causes mild ulcers in the food pipe which further gets irritate by the food passing through it and this irritation starts to give burning sensation. Besides this the other possible reason is again consuming too much acidic nature and spicy food. Every person who consumes acidic or spicy food has a high chance of having heartburn problem.
